I want us to think about our household inventory in terms of time, money, and physical items inside our homes. Let’s start over and look at the home through a different lens.
My previous productivity advice to outsource, hire help, or automate things is not always available or economically feasible anymore. We are now keeping a larger stockpile of many home goods (toilet paper anyone?). This means that the nature of our work and our homes is changing. Because of the COVID pandemic, we are home more and we are using our homes differently than before. We can then conscientiously pace ourselves to prioritize what is truly important and urgent. Once we recognize that, it reduces our stress. Our work will never be done - at work or at home. I think this is super useful because it allows us to take the emotion out of our thinking, and to realize that there is work to be done. I am sharing some of my thoughts about analyzing how we use the principles we use to run a business and relate them to how we run our households. Taking inventory can help you decide what items you want to keep, and what items you have been unnecessarily storing in your house.This episode, Understanding Inventory at Home, is directly related to Episodes 361 and 362 on the different kinds of work. Maybe you have a kitchen appliance stuffed in a cupboard that you haven’t thought of since Thanksgiving of 2003. Maybe you have five winter jackets, and only wore two last year. While you are already setting aside the time to evaluate all your possessions, you can take this time to downsize and declutter any items you no longer find necessary. If you need to file a claim, video proof can be helpful.

There are many methods to catalog the items in your home that don’t require hours on a computer.

If there is a fire in your home, you’ll likely remember the large items, such as furniture, but what about the smaller items? While taking a home inventory sounds like a tedious and boring task, there are several reasons why you should set aside the time to take one.
